8^th Annual Spring Showcase

What: This year our theme for ballet classes is Don Quixote. Modern and Theater Dance classes will perform their own pieces separate from the theme.

Who: All students who paid a costume fee in Theater Dance or Pre-Ballet I and older participate in the Spring Showcase. Creative Movement and Adult classes do not participate. If you do not pay a $65 fee per costume, we cannot order you one.

Dress Rehearsal Sunday, June 2:

At the studio. Mandatory for all participants. No coffee on the premises on this day.

Your rehearsal will begin approximately 10 minutes after arrival time. You can get individual photographs taken by a professional photographer afterwards. You should be done rehearsal and photographs in about 30 minutes. Photographer is present until 2:30pm. Arrive by 2:00pm to get photos taken. Pay her directly.

Performance Day Drop-off Sunday, June 9:

All students who perform in only one show should arrive in costume with hair neatly in a bun and light stage make-up already done. Dressing room space is limited. Drop off your child in the lobby with a staff member. Only volunteers are allowed backstage.

12 noon:          all students in 2pm show will rehearse dance onstage

3:45pm:           all students in 5pm show will rehearse dance onstage

Getting There: The Gordon Theater is a 7 minute drive from the studio. Driving directions are available on the Rutgers website.

It is also accessible by NJ public transit. Take the PATCO line from Philadelphia to the Camden City Hall stop at Market and 5th Streets or the Riverline Lightrail to the Cooper St/Rutgers U stop at Cooper and 3rd Streets. Both stops are mere blocks from the campus. See the NJ Transit website for timetables.

Volunteers: There will be a volunteer meeting, announced at a later date. If you did not volunteer last year, it is mandatory that you attend the meeting. Volunteer sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

We will need at 2 or 3 parent volunteers assigned to each class (depending on class size). For classes performing in both shows, we would like 2 sets of volunteers so that each set will have a chance to see one of the shows.

Costumes: You may take your costume home once all tuition is paid. Remember your costume and hairpiece on show day. Classes in only one show are welcome to come to the theater and dress rehearsal dressed in their costume.

Shoes/Tights: All Ballet classes (including Pre-Ballet) should have light pink ballet footed tights, and pink leather or canvas ballet slippers with a strap sewn (not tied) across the instep. Theater Dance should have tan (non-shimmer) tights and tan jazz shoes.

Tickets: $15 each, cash or check only. First come, first served. We will not sell tickets the day of the show, so purchase yours now.

Tickets are general admission and are only valid for the performance time printed on the ticket. If students are going to attend one of the performances in which they are not participating, they will need a ticket to ensure that there is adequate seating. A child who is sitting on your lap the entire show does not need a ticket.

Filming/DVDs: DO NOT TAKE FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY DURING THE SHOW. It upsets and distracts the performers. You are not permitted to film during the performance but we will have the performance professionally filmed. DVDs will be available for $25. The DVD will have both performances. They must be pre-paid/pre-ordered. Forms at front desk.

After the Show: One parent/guardian can pick up each child at the door to the dressing room. A volunteer can bring your child to you.

What if I am attending both shows?: If your child is in both the 2pm and the 5pm, he or she should stay at the theater and pack a lunch with plenty of water and snacks. If you and your other family members would like to leave, we recommend the Cherry Hill Mall for dining (Capital Grill, Seasons 52, food court, etc.) and shopping. It is about 15 minutes from the theater.

If you attend the Rittenhouse location and have never been to our main studios, you will use the silver call box to the right of the front door to call upstairs. Press the up arrow until you see “PHILADANCE” and then press the below Call button.

If you want to purchase a photography package from Debbie Boardman, you must arrive by 2:00pm to get photos taken. She is done at 2:30pm. You will pay her directly.

Hair for girls: Pulled back into a bun on the crown of the head. Use a hair tie, plenty of hair pins, a hair net, and hair spray. If hair is too short for a bun, it must be secured away from the face as best as possible.

Hair for boys: Neat and clean. Should not fall into the face.

Costumes: Remember the costume itself, but also extra bobby pins to secure the hair piece. Footed pink ballet tights and pink ballet slippers for girls in Ballet. Tan tights and tan jazz shoes for girls in Theater Dance. Black ballet shoes for boys in Ballet. Black jazz shoes for boys in Theater Dance.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Academy offices at 219 Cuthbert Street, 3rd Floor starting April 9. For the first week, there is a limit of 6 per student. On April 16, that limit is lifted. Cash or check only, $15 each. Call or email with questions.

Featuring choreography by Drexel University students, Philadelphia Dance Academy faculty, and Youth Ballet members.

We are excited to welcome Spoke the Hub’s Young Artists (STHYA) dancers to perform in this year’s concert. Students in the Young Artists program study modern dance, ballet, and improvisation, and create and perform their own original choreography throughout the year. They also have the opportunity to work with professional guest artists, and are often invited to participate in Spoke the Hub’s adult professional productions and other community events. Most recently, four STH young artists joined the adult company on tour and performed their own choreography for Marta Becket at the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley, CA.

Philadelphia Youth Ballet members will perform with STHYA once more on visiting Brooklyn in April, an exciting second step in our new relationship.

These events serve many purposes. Not only do PYB dancers get the opportunity to connect with their communities, but they get the benefit of additional performance practice – always a welcome thing. Practicing performance presence is one of the wonderful things about PYB. Dancers have the opportunity to hone skills like maintaining a professional demeanor despite the challenges that sometimes come with live performance. A perfect example of this very thing happened at Winter Wonderland. A dancer lost her skirt halfway through Marzipan! Did she stop? Did she get upset? Certainly not. She kicked it to the side and kept on dancing, smiling even more. We were very proud of the way she dealt with this obstacle.
