Nutcracker

In December we present our annual production of the classic Nutcracker ballet. This is a wonderful opportunity for those ballet students who really enjoy performing. Through rehearsing for and performing in the Nutcracker, participants are able to gain an appreciation for the time and effort involved in preparing for a show. Performing with fellow students is an invaluable experience for young dancers, and being part of such a classic tradition will give them fond memories for years to come.

Audition Forms

Online audition forms must be completed in advance. There are separate forms for Nutcracker, PYB, Boys Ballet Scholarship Program, or placement for the school year.

Links to these forms are available on our homepage each summer in advance of audition day.

FAQs

When is it?

Early to mid-December each year. The 2016 dates are December 16-18. We usually have 2 casts and 4 performances. Each cast performs twice. Each show lasts about one hour and thirty minutes.

Where is it?

In a local theater. The 2016 venue is the Mandell Theater at Drexel University, 33rd & Chestnut Streets (3220 Chestnut St), Philadelphia, PA.

Who participates?

All ballet students age 5 and older are eligible to participate. Audition times are announced in the summer.

How much does it cost to participate?

The participation fee is $175, due on the first day of rehearsal. This includes a Nutcracker t-shirt. This does not include any tickets.

When do students learn the choreography?

Students rehearse at our main Old City location on the weekends. Most rehearsals are Saturdays between 1:00pm and 5:00pm. Most cast members will not need to be there the entire time, just for one hour or two.

How many rehearsals can I miss?

You may miss only 2 rehearsals, although we would prefer you miss less than 2. This is very important. Young dancers need all their fellow cast members present in order to best learn spacing and choreography.

What do students have to wear to perform?

We provide all costumes. In addition to these borrowed costumes, students must wear their own nude leotards, footed pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. Other footwear may be required depending on the role. Boys may be required to wear a specific color tights or socks depending on their role.

Is there a Dress Rehearsal?

Yes. There is a mandatory Dress Rehearsal for each cast, once at the studio and once at the theater venue the week of the show.

How much are tickets to the performances?

Around $18 per ticket. They vary in price depending on seat location and go on sale online in October.

Do you film the performances?

Yes. We always have both casts professionally filmed. You can order DVDs for $25 each. Each DVD contains both casts.

More details are posted throughout the Fall Semester, both on our Latest News page and on the studio bulletin board.
