In December we present our annual production of the classic Nutcracker ballet. This is a wonderful opportunity for those ballet students who really enjoy performing. Through rehearsing for and performing in the Nutcracker, participants are able to gain an appreciation for the time and effort involved in preparing for a show. Performing with fellow students is an invaluable experience for young dancers, and being part of such a classic tradition will give them fond memories for years to come.
The 2019 audition for the 10th Annual Nutcracker production was held on Saturday, August 24 at our Old City location. There is one Nutcracker audition. There are no make-up auditions.
NOTE: Please know we reserve the right to slightly change the rehearsal schedule according to what needs additional rehearsal. Please check frequently for updates.
When is it?
Early to mid-December each year. The 2019 dates are December 13-15. We usually have 2 casts and 4 performances. Each cast performs twice. Each show lasts about one hour and thirty minutes.
Friday, December 13 – Red Cast Dress Rehearsal
Saturday, December 14 – Green Cast Dress Rehearsal, 2:00p & 5:30p Performances
Sunday, December 15 – 12:00p & 3:30p Performances
Where is it?
In a local theater. The 2019 venue is the Mandell Theater at Drexel University, 33rd & Chestnut Streets (3220 Chestnut St), Philadelphia, PA.
Students currently enrolled Pre-Ballet 2, Primary, and Pre-Professional ballet programs at the Philadelphia Dance Academy are eligible to participate. All Pre-Ballet 2 dancers need to be at least 5 years old by the audition date to be eligible to participate. The Adult/Teen ballet classes are not eligible to participate.
How much does it cost to participate?
The participation fee is $200 and is automatically charged to the primary credit card on file on the first day of rehearsal. This includes a Nutcracker t-shirt and a digital download of the performance. This does not include any tickets.
When do students learn the choreography?
Students rehearse at our main Old City location on the weekends. Most rehearsals are Saturdays between 1:00pm and 5:30pm. Most cast members will not need to be there the entire time, just for one hour or two.
How many rehearsals can I miss?
You may miss only 2 rehearsals, although we would prefer you miss less than 2. This is very important. Young dancers need all their fellow cast members present in order to best learn spacing and choreography.
What do students have to wear to perform?
We provide all costumes. In addition to these borrowed costumes, students must wear their own nude leotards, footed pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. Other footwear may be required depending on the role. Boys may be required to wear a specific color tights or socks depending on their role.
Is there a Dress Rehearsal?
Yes. There is a mandatory Dress Rehearsal for each cast, once at the studio and once at the theater venue the week of the show. The mandatory in-studio dress rehearsal is Saturday, December 7.
Red cast dress rehearsal at the theater will be on Friday, December 13.
Green cast dress rehearsal at the theater will be on Saturday, December 14 prior to the 2:00p performance.
How much are tickets to the performances?
$15-$35 per ticket. They vary in price depending on seat location and go on sale online in October.
Do you film the performances?
Yes. We always have both casts professionally filmed. A digital download of the performance is included in your participation fee.
More details are posted throughout the Fall Semester, both on our Latest News page and on the studio bulletin board.
